Asian Literature in the Victorian World
Intro
In the 19th Century, a vast quantity of literature from Asian languages was translated into English. Popular editions were created to make classic texts like the Ramayana, the Shahnameh, the Bhagavad Gita, the Qur’an and the Confucian Analects accessible to the general public.
AVaTAR (the Archive of Victorian Translations from Asia and their Readerships), is a collection of these books.
View CatalogueThere are over one hundred books in AVaTAR, and most contain pencil annotations, inscriptions, bookplates, doodles or other signs of use left behind by their original Victorian and Edwardian readers. Select individual books in the collection to learn about their provenance and the lives of their former owners.
